How can it be August already!….it feels like this summer came around extra quickly simply because it knew I wasn’t going to be taking my annual break this year. I am stuck in a city I call home, with strangers from other galaxies (tourist) all around. All my friends are sunning themselves on the Med and colleagues, well I have no colleagues as I work from home, but phone colleagues, you know, the PR officers, other writers, editors, internet support staff, are all on voicemail, unfair. And it is hot! Really I love the sun, but for a week now I have been doing a rain dance in the communal green spaces around my flat. I have a ton of work to do and no impetus to actually do it. I’d much rather be lying around sucking on the ice-poles I sneak out of the house when my son isn’t looking. I do that a lot, sneak around my son, our positions in life have completely reversed, he is now the “adult” and I am the one in need of supervision. Or at least that is the only explanation I can think of as to why he frowns and tuts at the sound of the The Killers blaring out of the iPod travel speakers that follow me out into the humid air of the gardens.
Still it did mean that when the summer sales started early this year, I was here to snap up all the bargains; thank you, whatever god controls Ramadan. Ha! By the time the girlies get back into town everything will have been cleared and no evidence of the recent scrimmage will be evident, they’ll have missed all the…fun. A small comfort but a comfort never the less. And though they will be tanned and glowing and rested, my cut-price Vivers will last a helluva lot longer!
